Murakami's novel "1Q84" is an example of literature in the mystery genre where appearances can be deceiving. The two main characters of the novel, Aomame and Tengo both have vague and similar conflicted past histories which leaves them with both cynical almost negative perspectives of the world around them and each finds themselves involved in situations that are more complex and dangerous than they suspect them to be.
